How to setup a wireless network without a router

Or you simply want to extend your Wi-Fi network coverage. Naturally, the first solution that comes into mind is to buy a router and - problem solved! But what if this is not a solution due to various reasons - temporary setup, type of Internet connection to share, lack of power outlet, no equipment available on the spot, etc?

Setting up a wireless Internet connection without a router is usually done by creating an ad-hoc network. But that has certain limitations both in terms of security and compatibility. If you've got a Windows PC or laptop, you can very easily use it to create a wireless home network. To set this up, you will need to have a wireless card or adapter on each of your machines. You can connect up to 9 machines using this method.

Start by opening your Control Panel. Choose Network and internet connections. Next, click on Network connections and right-click on your wireless network adapter. It should be called Wireless network connection. Choose View available wireless networks. On this screen, hit the Advanced button as you see in the screen shot below:.
